Straws For Life Project

6,000 young people die each day from bad drinking water!

Can you guess that I’m passionate about water? I’m also equally passionate about the basic human right of water being available to everyone on the planet. At any given moment, about half of the world’s poor are suffering from waterborne disease, of which over 6,000 - mainly children, die each day by consuming unsafe drinking water. One more time…

Today, more than one billion people of the world’s population are without access to safe drinking water.

Safe water interventions have vast potential to transform the lives of millions of people. Water filtration tools not only provide safe drinking water but also have a positive health impact on the most vulnerable populations, including young children, pregnant women and those with debilitated immune systems.

The Cochrane review (2006) demonstrates that water filters are the most effective interventions among all point-of-use water treatment methods for reducing diarrheal diseases. This study also proves that it is not eneough to treat water at the point-of-source; it must also be made safe at the point of consumption.

Last fall, my friends Bruce and Eileen Broderick (over at Being Water, LLC) and I discovered the Vestergaard Frandsen company headquarted in Switzerland.  They are a world leader in personal water filtration systems with the LifeStraw.  LifeStraws are only distributed to those in need and you won’t find these life-saving water devices at your local camping/recreational outfitting store here in the U.S.  They are distributed, with purpose, to where they are needed most. Working together with Bruce and Eileen, we created The Straws For Life Project because it so closely aligns with our purpose and passion about the conservation of water.

We actively support the distribution of LifeStraws through and arrangement with Rotary International. When you shop for water-saving products over at www.BeingWater.com, 5% of all profits are donated to deliver LifeStraws to those who desperately need it. Check this out: It only takes $6.50 to provide one person with a LifeStraw that supplies a year’s worth of drinking water (about 700+ liters!).  Imagine how much good we can do together with this program!

Purchase a “water-saving device” from Being Water…and help someone out with a “life-saving water device” on the other side of the world.
