Level-1

“Reduced use of the municipal fresh water supplied to the home.
Something that everyone can do in their home right now.  It is accomplished by an individual taking direct action to reduce their consumption and use of fresh water that is supplied to the home.  For most people this is municipal supplied water, but for some it might be a well.  Both sources are equally precious. Examples of good level 1 water conservation include:
  1. Taking a shorter shower.
  2. Installing a low-flow shower head.
  3. Altering your sprinkler schedule; (switch those lawns over to every 2 or 3 days…much more effective).
  4. Using a broom instead of hosing the driveway (sounds simple, but it’s highly effective).
  5. Repairing leaky faucets.
  6. Inspecting and replacing leaky toilet flapper valves.
  7. Water-saving washing machine (if considering a new machine, this is the type to look for - the water savings are great).
  8. Install a drip system instead of shrub sprinklers.
  9. …and more.

Benefit: Performed collectively, GOOD 1st Level Practices can result in easy savings of 20% or more of the fresh water usage in the home.
